The Beach Bag Packing List: What Actually Belongs in Your Tote

A well-packed beach bag comes down to four categories: sun, hydration, sand management, and valuables — plus one organizational trick that makes everything findable with wet hands.

Sun (the non-negotiables)

Sunscreen (SPF 30+, and remember it expires — check the date from last summer), lip balm with SPF, sunglasses, and a hat that packs flat. Pro move: keep a dedicated "sun pouch" that lives in your beach tote all season so it's never forgotten.

Hydration and snacks

An insulated bottle per person, plus snacks in hard containers rather than bags — soft packaging becomes sandy instantly. This category is why bag structure matters: bottles standing upright in a molded tote don't leak; bottles lying sideways in a slouchy canvas bag do.

Sand management

A quick-dry towel, a small brush or (old trick) baby powder for de-sanding skin, and a plastic bag or wet pouch for swimsuits on the way home. If your tote is EVA, sand management includes the bag itself: rinse it under the outdoor shower before it gets in the car — EVA is fully hoseable, which is the whole reason we make beach bags from it.

Valuables (the pouch rule)

Phone, keys, cards, and cash go in one zippered pouch, always in the same spot. An open-top beach tote is perfect for towels and terrible for finding a phone — the pouch solves it. Our Beach Prism totes build the phone pouch in; with any other tote, add your own.

The packing order trick

Pack in reverse: what you need last (dry clothes, towel) goes in first; what you need first (sunscreen, water) goes on top. Heavy items to the corners so the bag stands stable on sand.

The right bag for the job

An extra-large EVA tote hauls the family day; a medium covers a solo afternoon; a small carries the boardwalk-walk essentials. If your summers involve all three, the 3-piece EVA set covers every trip for $119 — waterproof, sandproof, and washable when the season ends.
