Togo vs. Pebbled vs. Epsom Leather: What's Actually the Difference?

The short answer: togo is a natural-grain leather that's soft, matte, and scratch-resistant; pebbled is the umbrella term for any leather with a bumpy grain, natural or embossed; and Epsom is an embossed leather that's stiffer, lighter, and holds sharp architectural shapes. They can look similar in photos — they feel and age completely differently in real life.

Togo: the everyday workhorse

Togo's grain is raised naturally during tanning, giving it an irregular, organic pebble and a soft hand-feel. It hides scratches, resists rain spots better than smooth leathers, and relaxes just slightly with age — enough to feel personal, not enough to lose shape. Pebbled: read the label carefully

"Pebbled leather" tells you what the surface looks like, not how it was made. A natural pebbled grain behaves much like togo. An embossed pebble — a pattern stamped onto corrected leather — looks uniform and can crack along stress points over years. The quick test: natural grain is irregular; machine-embossed grain repeats. Neither is "bad," but they shouldn't be priced the same.

Epsom: architecture over softness

Epsom is calf leather embossed with a fine, tight grain under high pressure. The result is stiff, lightweight, almost paper-crisp — which is why it's the leather of choice for sharp, geometric silhouettes. The trade-offs: it doesn't soften or develop character with age, and deep scratches can't be buffed out the way they can on natural-grain leather. Best for: occasion bags that must keep razor-sharp edges.

Best for Daily structured bags Everyday carry Formal, sharp-structured styles

For a bag you'll carry five days a week, we'd choose togo-grain every time — it's why our Classic collection is built on it, and why our belted work totes use grained and suede leathers rather than stiff embossed ones.
