Work Bag Essentials: The 12 Things Worth Carrying (and 5 That Just Add Weight)

A work bag needs twelve things — everything else is weight you'll carry five days a week for no reason. Here's the loadout that covers 99% of office days, plus the pouch system that keeps an open tote from becoming an archaeology dig.

The core twelve

Tech (4): laptop or tablet, one charger that does double duty (laptop + phone via USB-C), earbuds, and a compact power bank for commute days. Paper (2): one slim notebook and one good pen — a pen you like is a small daily luxury that costs nothing to carry. Personal (4): a card wallet (full-size wallets are commuter weight), keys on a clip or leash so they're findable, lip balm, and hand cream in travel size. Contingency (2): a small tin of pain relievers/plasters, and a compact umbrella from roughly October to April.

The five to stop carrying

The full-size wallet (swap to cards), the second charger, the just-in-case sweater (leave one at the office instead), the receipts colony at the bottom of the bag, and the water bottle inside the bag — bottles ride upright in a corner or don't come; one loose cap has ended many bag interiors.

The pouch system

Open totes stay organized with three pouches: tech (cables, bank, earbuds), personal (cosmetic-sized items), and paper (documents that shouldn't crease). Reaching for a pouch beats fishing for a lip balm every time, and moving between bags takes thirty seconds — which is what makes a 3-bag capsule practical rather than aspirational.

The bag that carries it well

Twelve items plus pouches wants a structured tote with a base that keeps everything upright — a floppy bag turns the tidiest loadout into a heap. Our Work collection Belted totes were sized around exactly this loadout: the Belted 10 for the no-laptop day, the Belted 15 for the full twelve. Whatever bag you use, run the checklist from our work tote buying guide — structure, straps, hardware, interior — and your twelve things will still be organized at 6 p.m.
