What Is an EVA Tote? The Beach Bag Material, Explained

EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is a flexible, rubber-like foam material that's fully waterproof, nearly weightless for its volume, and washable with plain water — which is exactly why it has taken over the beach bag category. If you've seen those structured, softly glossy totes standing upright on the sand, you've seen EVA.

Why EVA beat canvas at the beach

Canvas totes absorb; EVA sheds. Salt water, sunscreen, melted ice from the cooler — on canvas these become stains and mildew; on EVA they rinse off under a hose. EVA also holds its shape: a molded EVA tote stands open on its own, so you're not excavating a collapsed bag for your phone with wet hands. And because the material is closed-cell foam, it's tip-resistant and doesn't get heavier when wet.

Are EVA bags actually waterproof?

Yes — the material itself is 100% waterproof, not water-resistant. The practical caveat: most EVA totes (ours included) are open-top, so they protect contents from splashes and wet ground, not from submersion or heavy rain from above. For phones and cash, use an interior pouch — it's why our Beach Prism totes come with a phone pouch built in.

How to clean one (it's absurdly easy)

Rinse with water, or wipe with a damp cloth. For sunscreen film or sand in the corners, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then air-dry. No conditioners, no sprays, no special products — this is the lowest-maintenance bag material that exists. Full care details live in our FAQ.

Beyond the beach

The same properties that work on sand work everywhere messy: grocery runs (spilled produce wipes off), the gym (sweaty gear, no odor absorption), pool days, gardening, kids' sports. Many of our customers keep a medium EVA tote permanently in the car as the everything-bag.

Sizing quick guide

Small (bitty) EVA totes handle wallet-phone-sunscreen days; mediums are the everyday errand size; extra-large is the family-beach-day hauler. Can't decide? Our 3-piece sets cover all three sizes for less than buying separately — in blues, pinks, and earth tones.
